Everyone loves an underdog story.
Michael McDowell wasn’t a favorite to win the 2021 Daytona 500, as he didn’t claim a victory in his last 357 NASCAR Cup Series starts. That changed Sunday evening.
With Joey Logano out in front on the final lap of the race, Brad Keselowski attempted to dart around him, but Logano threw a block on his Team Penske teammate, crashing them both. McDowell, meanwhile, stayed in position where he was and drove through the crash scene for a stunning upset.
Here is video of the fierce final lap that resulted in a few more crashes on the racetrack:
And here’s McDowell’s ecstatic interview after the race:
The win for McDowell was his first career Cup win in his 358th start. He had 100-1 odds to win the race.
“There’s been lots of years where I was wondering what the heck am I doing and why am I doing it?” McDowell said via ESPN. “I always knew if I just kept grinding that one day everything will line up and go right.’'
And it did.
