CHICAGO — Benches and bullpens emptied onto the field in the first inning of Thursday’s game between the Cleveland Indians and Chicago White Sox.
Chicago baserunner Adam Eaton was called out trying to advance to second base after he over-slid the bag and was tagged out by Cleveland shortstop Andrés Giménez.
Eaton took exception to the way Gimenez tagged him out and immediately jumped up in the 22-year-old infielder’s face, shoving him in the chest with two hands. Second baseman César Hernández stepped between the two as both benches emptied onto the field and were joined by members of both bullpens.
Cooler heads prevailed and no punches were thrown. Eaton appeared to approach both Giménez and Hernández in a conciliatory fashion before heading back to the dugout.
The fracas did not come as much of a shock as the two rival teams were completing a four-game series that has already seen some interesting play on the field.
On Monday, the White Sox won in walk-off fashion when infielder Yu Chang’s errant throw hit Yasmani Grandal in the helmet, allowing Nick Madrigal to score the winning run. Tuesday’s game went into extra innings, with Cleveland starter Shane Bieber tossing nine scoreless frames and still getting the win in 10. On Wednesday, Carlos Rodón tossed the 20th no-hitter in White Sox history.
