After the Golden State Warriors jumped out to an early lead over the Los Angeles Lakers during Wednesday night's NBA play-in tournament game, head coach Steve Kerr delivered an in-game speech to his team that made the rounds on social media.
"They got a lot of doubt down there," Kerr said of the Lakers at the end of the first quarter. "We've got a lot of belief ... holding our own on the boards, defending without fouling, all good stuff."
Despite leading by 13 at halftime, a sloppy second half doomed the Warriors in their eventual 103-100 loss, with Golden State now needing to beat the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday night to reach the postseason.
On Thursday morning, Los Angeles Lakers star Anthony Davis — who struggled early on — apparently saw a clip of Kerr's speech on Instagram, and felt the urge to react with five (five!) laughing/crying emojis.
Davis was guarded well by Warriors forward Draymond Green throughout the game; the former NBA Defensive Player of the Year kept the Lakers star out of the paint and strongly contested his mid-range shots.
But Davis does get the last laugh here. And since the Lakers are locked into the Western Conference's No. 7 seed and the Warriors are hoping for the No. 8 seed, the two teams will not meet again this year unless both are able to make it to the conference finals.
