The Oakland A’s had a longstanding offer from MLB commissioner Rob Manfred to put public pressure on the city of Oakland should progress between the city and the A’s over a new ballpark come to a standstill, according to multiple sources with intimate knowledge of the A’s proposed Howard Terminal project. This offer, per sources, predated the Howard Terminal project and was first floated when the team was pursuing a location at the Laney College site in 2017.
Sources said that in one meeting, Manfred was described as a “silver bullet” toward securing a new ballpark at Howard Terminal, and that there were ongoing discussions about when would be the best time to take Manfred up on his loose offer.
