The UFC is on track to have a new lightweight champion.
Charles Oliveira and Michael Chandler successfully made weight for Saturday’s vacant lightweight title bout, which headlines UFC 262 at Toyota Center in Houston. Both hit the championship mark at 155 pounds on Friday morning.
The co-main event saw a slight scare as Beneil Dariush needed two attempts to make the lightweight limit. On his first attempt, Dariush weighed in at 156.5 pounds, half a pound over the limit, but he was granted an extra hour to make a second attempt. On his second try, Dariush weighed in at 156 pounds, with the assistance of a box to cover him as he stripped his shorts off. His opponent Tony Ferguson also made weight at 156 pounds.
Twenty-three of the twenty-four fighters scheduled to compete Saturday successfully made weight, with Rogerio Bontorin being the lone exception.
Bontorin weighed in at 137 pounds on his first attempt, one pound over the bantamweight limit. He normally competes at flyweight, but is stepping in on less than a month’s notice as a replacement for Alex Perez. His opponent Matt Schnell, who also normally competes at flyweight, weighed in at 136 pounds.
Bontorin was eligible to get another hour to make a second attempt, but declined. His bout with Schnell will proceed at a catchweight and he forfeits 20 percent of his purse to Schnell according to the UFC.
