Richard Jefferson calls out Kevin Garnett for his Kyrie Irving stomp comments: ‘I don’t want to hear that noi - MassLive.com

There’s been a lot of after-the-fact discourse of Kyrie Irving appearing to stomp “Lucky the Leprechaun’s” face after the Nets’ Game 4 win at TD Garden. It rubbed a lot of former Celtics the wrong way, spanning generations.

One of those former Celtics was Kevin Garnett, the recent Hall of Famer who spent six seasons in Boston and won the 2008 NBA championship. He said “you can’t do that” on his Instagram story, adding it wasn’t “coo” on no level. Garnett was just one of the masses of Celtics — and fans — who criticized Irving after what was likely his final game in Boston this season.

Richard Jefferson, the player-turned-commentator, had a problem with Garnett’s comments. He took to Twitter to voice that displeasure as Garnett, for all his impressive talents on-court, was a divisive player infamous for his trash talk.

“Kevin Garnett has done FAR more disrespectful things on the court than what Kyrie did,” Jefferson wrote in his tweet. “I don’t want to hear that noise. He’s crossed that line plenty of times...... plenty of times.”

“Seen it, heard it, heard about it!” was his second tweet in the thread.

Garnett was an all-world talent, but his trash talking caused issues at multiple points throughout his career. Former Piston Charlie Villanueva, who has an autoimmune skin disease, said Garnett called him a “cancer” in a game in 2010. Garnett claimed he was calling him “cancerous to your team and our league” instead, but the optics didn’t look great. There were other instances where Garnett’s mouth, as expected, ruffled feathers with opposing players.

Jefferson and Irving played together in Cleveland for two season from 2015-17, where they won the 2016 NBA championship in a crazy 3-1 series comeback over the Golden State Warriors.

There has been two separate issues, of varying levels, that spawned from Game 4 between the Celtics and Nets. Irving stomped on the logo, but while he ventured back into the locker room, a fan grazed his head after throwing a water bottle at Irving. That fan, Cole Buckley, has been arrested and was charged with assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon, a felony.

The Irving stomp took a backseat to the water bottle incident, as one was another off-court fan incident in the NBA while the other had to do with a player and on-court, basketball issues. But more former Celtics have joined the stomp discussion as they didn’t agree with Irving, who played in Boston from 2017-19.
