Browns have about $25 million in cap space heading into free agency with NFL cap set at $182.5 million - cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Browns have the highest adjusted salary cap in the NFL at about $212.9 million, according to figures released on Wednesday by the NFL Players Association.

They arrived there by virtue of the $182.5 million cap, which was set on Thursday, and their league-high cap carryover of $29,409,691. The cap is $2.5 million over the collectively-bargained floor of $180 million in the wake of COVID-19 revenue shortfalls. If not for the pandemic, the cap would’ve been about $210 million this season.

Heading into the negotiating period on Monday, and the official start of free agency and the league year on Wednesday, the Browns have about $24.363 million in cap space according to spotrac.com, which is 14th in the NFL.

Overthecap.com has the Browns at $24.866 in cap space, which is ninth in the NFL, according to their records. The cap space includes the Browns’ rookie pool allotment of $7,845,228, leaving them about $17 million to spend on free agents, their own and others.

It’s not a huge sum, meaning the Browns might still have to get creative if they want to add a few free agents. The Browns have a number of big-name players on their radar, including edge-rushers such as Pittsburgh’s Bud Dupree, New Orleans’ Trey Hendrickson and Cincinnati’s Carl Lawson.

They already cleared $3 million in cap space on Tuesday by releasing defensive end Adrian Clayborn, but don’t have many more similar moves like that to create space. They do have seven players with eight-figure salaries, but all are highly valued and expected to be here in 2021.

Jarvis Landry and Sheldon Richardson both have high salaries and low dead cap numbers, but the Browns are definitely counting on Landry in 2021, and Richardson, 30, is also believed to be in good standing. Landry’s cap hit is $14.753 million, second-most on the team behind Odell Beckham Jr. ($15.75 million), and his dead cap number is only $3 million. Richardson’s cap number is $13.166 million, third-most on the team in 2021, and his dead cap is only $1.666 million.

Tight end David Njoku’s $6.013 million fifth-year option salary also becomes guaranteed on March 17. Njoku has indicated he still wants to be traded, but the Browns to this point have been unwilling to deal him.
