Bob Myers addresses Kelly Oubre's murky future after trade deadline - SF Gate

The Golden State Warriors opted to keep Kelly Oubre at the trade deadline, and the free-agent-to-be did not sound overly enthused about head coach Steve Kerr's plan to have him come off the bench next season should he re-sign.

"I can't speak for the future ... but at the end of the day, I'm growing, I'm honing in on my skills in this league and I can offer a lot more than coming off the bench," Oubre told reporters Thursday night. "At the end of the day, this is my life, so I can't tell the future, only God can."

On Friday, Warriors general manager Bob Myers spoke to reporters for the first time after the deadline and noted that he's been in contact with Oubre's agent on a potential return for the 2021-2022 season. He added that he had no problem with Oubre's bench comments.

"I like what he said last night," Myers said. "He should want to start.”

Head coach Steve Kerr said Wednesday he would like to see Oubre back for the 2021-2022 season in a bench role, if financially feasible.

"As it relates to next year, Klay [Thompson] will be back and obviously Klay will be in the starting lineup," Kerr said. "I'd love to have Kelly back next year. If that were to happen, it would be off the bench more than likely, because we'd be looking at Klay, Steph [Curry] and [Andrew] Wiggins in the starting lineup."

It may be difficult for the Warriors to retain Oubre for next season, given the fact that the team will be paying the luxury tax once again and would likely be limited to using the taxpayer mid-level exception.
