Daniel Jones still has a lot to prove, but he’s shown enough through two years that he helped draw in a top-flight wide receiver to sign with the Giants.
Sure, Kenny Golladay was signed to a lucrative, life-changing contract — four years, $72 million — but the Giants didn’t even come to an agreement on that deal until Friday.

That was Day 3 of the process the Giants put Golladay through, interviewing him and giving him a physical, to make sure they were prepared to bring him in. Golladay was widely viewed as the top available free agent wide receiver and he still went through all of that.
Clearly, he wanted to be a Giant.
At some point, he spoke with Jones. That didn’t hurt.
“He reached out,” Golladay said on Saturday in a video conference call with reporters. “He just said how good of a player he thought I was, I said the same thing about him. And he also just said ‘we’re trying to do something great here.’ And that’s what I’m all about.”
Jones is far from a finished product. Golladay seems to understand that.
Last season, Jones only had 11 touchdowns passes in 14 games. Golladay scored 11 touchdowns on his own in 2019, when he made the Pro Bowl. He’s turned it over 39 times in 27 career games. On top of that, the Giants offense only scored 17.5 points per game last season, the second-worst total in the league.
But the Giants believe in Jones as their franchise quarterback. They’ve said so on more than one occasion. It seems Golladay believes in him too.
“Well first off, he’s still fresh in the league,” Golladay said. “I want to grow with him.”
Jones said in a statement released by the Giants that he’s “very excited to have Kenny.”
“He’s been a big time playmaker in this league,” Jones said. “When we spoke, he was interested in the culture we have in the building and the mindset of the team. I think he had heard it from coaches but wanted to hear how we saw it as players and how much we believed in it. I think finding the right fit in that sense was important to him. I can’t wait to get out on the field and get to work with him.”
Golladay is 27, turning 28 in November. Now he’s under contract through 2024. Jones is 23, turning 24 in May, and he’s only under contract through 2022, though the Giants can extend his fifth-year option in 2023. It’s unclear yet if that will be the right move.
How Jones looks in 2021 will go a long way toward helping the Giants figuring that out.
It’ll help to have Golladay.
“I’m still growing as a player and I feel like me and him can do some good things,” Golladay said. “We haven’t gotten on the practice field yet, but me and him are both very excited.”
