Oakland A's starting pitcher Chris Bassitt was taken off the field on a cart on Tuesday after being hit in the face with a 100-mph line drive. 

The incident occurred in the second inning of Oakland's game at the Chicago White Sox. Chicago outfielder Brian Goodwin hit a 100.1-mph comebacker off a Bassitt pitch that hit the A's starter on the right side of his face. Bassitt immediately fell to the ground, bleeding on the mound.

Play stopped as trainers attended to Bassitt while stunned players and fans watched the scene unfold.

Bassitt eventually left the field on a cart. The A's later announced that Bassitt was "conscious and aware" while en route to a hospital. After the game, manager Bob Melvin told reporters that Bassitt never lost consciousness and that the team was still awaiting test results.

"They had to do some stitches. He’s in a scan, and we'll know more about potential fractures tomorrow or later tonight."

Melvin didn't take questions after providing his update on Bassitt. The White Sox won the game, 9-0.

Bassitt is Oakland's best pitcher this season, with a a 3.06 ERA and 12-3 record entering Tuesday's game. The 32-year-old made his first All-Star team in July.
