It appears like the Emoni Bates sweepstakes will come to a close this week.
The 5-star basketball phenom is expected to choose between three colleges and the NBA G League on Friday, according to his father, Elgin’s Instagram account.
There was speculation that his decision was going to made on Wednesday, but his father announced the younger Bates would make his choice at 6 p.m. on Friday.
“Now there’s nothing to leak,” the elder Bates wrote in his post.
Bates, 17, reclassified from the 2022 class to the 2021 class and narrowed down his list of options to four earlier this month.
He is expected to choose between Michigan State, Memphis, Oregon and the NBA G League. Bates was originally committed to Michigan State but decommitted earlier this year. The 6-foot-9 forward also took official visits to Memphis and Oregon last week.
Since reclassifying, Bates is now ranked as the No. 3 prospect in the 2021 class behind Chet Holmgren and Jaden Hardy, according to ESPN. He was ranked as the No. 1 prospect in 2022 before joining this year’s recruiting class.
But because he is only 17, he could potentially spend two seasons at his next destination based on the NBA’s draft rules that states a player must be 19-years-old and one year removed from high school to enter the draft.
Bates finished his final summer as a high school basketball player with Bates Fundamentals, his father’s summer league team, where he averaged 20 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.8 assists in nine games.
